This small town is friendly and very low key. No high rise hotels or touristic vibes here. The beach is spectacularly beautiful and rarely crowded, even in peak holiday times. The water is very swimmable most days, especially at the south end of the beach, and warning flags indicate times when extra caution is called for or the water should be avoided due to undertow. The north end of the beach is nearly deserted and features a lagoon with many beautiful shore birds such as pelicans, herons, spoonbills, and ibises.
The year round population of around 2,500 swells with 500 - 1,000 or so snowbirds between November and April. Local residents and visitors are friendly and open and willing to connect if you are. Common courtesy (greetings, por favor, gracias, muy amable, etc.) go a long way here. The influx of Norteños makes for entrepreneurial offerings of goods and services such as organic greens, espresso drinks, small restaurants and taco stands, bakery, sidewalk juice bars, fish markets, etc., for a mutually beneficial relationship between locals and guests.
