IMPORTANT: Keep your tourist card from Immigration. You will need it to exit the country.
What to bring - We provide bed linens, bath and beach towels, soap, shampoo, and conditioner. We provide drinking water, but please bring your refillable water bottle from home to cut down on plastic waste. Bring swim wear for sure and a snorkel and mask if you like. You’ll want sunscreen and bug repellent for outdoor evening times, which you can bring from home or support the local shops and buy here. Bring ear plugs; Mexico is NOT a quiet country. Cockadoodledoo!
Transportation - Lo de Marcos is about an hour north of Puerto Vallarta International Airport. It is reachable by rental car, taxi, Uber (less expensive than a taxi according to recent guests), or public bus. Our address is 38 San Marcos, and the number 38 is outside the gate by the electric meter. Yellow sign on gate says Casa Jubilación. Seems to show up correctly on GoogleMaps.
Car Rental - We recommend renting a car only if you want to leave Lo de Marcos to explore the surrounding area or if walking the half mile to the beach and around town is not appealing or comfortable. Golf carts are available for rent for in town transportation. We are happy to provide suggestions for day trips depending on your interests. We had a great experience with Gecko Rental Car out of Bucerias. They arrange an airport pick up for you, and the price you are quoted is the actual price with no bait and switch or unexpected charges for insurance. They are great about orienting customers to the unique rules of the road in Mexico, in particular, making left turns, which are usually accessed by the lateral road to the right of the highway. If arriving by car, take the second left after you enter town and go 1 block to the one-way concrete street heading back towards the highway. Turn left there and then make your first right at the T intersection onto Calle San Marcos. Sounds complicated but you are basically going around the block due to one way streets. We are on the right just past the brick house with the blue door on the corner of Villas Del Mar, second to the last house on the street.
Taxi - Many taxis are available at the airport. If you are not looking for a taxi, it’s best to walk purposefully through the hotel/time share, taxi, and shuttle hustle in the airport lobby area. You can get into the taxi queue in front of the airport. This is the official taxi stand; the time share operators will offer you rides but don’t be taken in. Be sure to get a price quote from your driver before you load your luggage or get in the cab; they should have a price sheet hanging around their neck. Alternately, you can cross the pedestrian overpass at the airport and catch a cab or an Uber from the lateral across the street. You may save some money by doing this. If you make friends in the Customs or Immigration lines, you may find folks heading to Sayulita, San Pancho, Lo de Marcos, Rincon de Guayabitos, Los Ayala, or La Peñita with whom you can share a taxi to save some pesos, too. If you are in a taxi, you may want to stop at the Mega grocery in Bucerias. You can find pretty much everything you need at the local groceries, but you may find better selection (especially vegetables, beer, and tequila) and prices at the Mega (especially for tequila!). There are many banks with ATMs at the Mega as well if you don't want to wait in line at the airport.
Bus - Cross the pedestrian overpass past the end of the airport building and wait for a bus on the lateral road. The green Compostela buses that specifically have Lo de Marcos written on the window will bring you to Lo de Marcos. Some of the newer buses have digital readouts. It doesn’t hurt to confirm with the driver; just say Lo de Marcos with a question mark in your voice if you don’t speak Spanish. Bus is by far the cheapest and simplest way to get here. It will cost you about $3.50 (75 pesos at last report) depending on the exchange rate.
When the bus makes the left turn into Lo de Marcos, get your gear ready. When the driver slows down for the first speed bump, ask to get off there. The first left after the speed bump is our street. The first block of it is paved and has a shiny new street sign that reads "San Marcos." We are 2-1/2 blocks on the right just after the brick house with the blue gate and door on the corner. You should recognize us from the pix on the website. Blue metal gate, hand painted sign says Casa Jubilacion, #38 on wall over the electric meters. See photos below.
We are often reachable by phone or text or WhatsApp, which is a great way to communicate down here. If we are available, we may be able to meet you and guide you to our place, especially if you arrive after dark. See the Contact Your Host page. Ask your provider about using your phones in Mexico.

ATMs - We recommend getting your pesos at an ATM here in Mexico for the best exchange rate, but you can buy some in advance if you wish. There is no place to exchange dollars for pesos here! There is currently a new ATM in Lo de Marcos on the west side of the plaza by the dentist's office, but we can't guarantee that it will be working or have actual money in it. It's a good idea to use an ATM at the airport or at the Mega shopping plaza. Surrounding towns have ATMs if you run short and ours is not working. Be careful about using ATMs that are not associated with major banks such as Santander, HSBC, Scotia, etc., and always guard your PIN. There are reliable ATMs in the airport and in the Mega grocery. There will probably be a 5,000 peso limit per day on your card, and be sure to let your bank know you will be using it out of the country. Don't plan on using your credit card here in Lo de Marcos.
